However, if we assume that it is largely run by people with an agenda (you might want to check out my short post entitled Media Conspiracies) that revolves more around persuading people to a particular point of view (liberalism/socialism) that is antithetical to the views of the average American then it becomes understandable. But of course I'm preaching to the choir.

There is a great series of political novels by Allen Drury that provides an inside perspective to the media that I'm sure you'd enjoy. The titles in sequence are: Advise and Consent (which was also turned into a decent movie), A Shade of Difference, Capable of Honor, Preserve and Protect, and two alternate endings Come Nineveh, Come Tyre and the Promise of Joy. I used to buy these and give them away to people because I thought they so accurately portrayed the political world. They are on my personal recommended reading list.

Another book which does a decent job of explaining liberalism is Slouching Towards Gomorrah by Judge Robert Bork. And of course there is The Law by Frederic Bastiat that eviscerates the liberal/progressive/socialist view on the role of government.

If you liked this speech from my father you might also enjoy a speech I recorded last 4th of July. You can view it on in my post http://mannkindperspectives.blogspot.com/2010/07/hand-of-providence-boston-freed.html.

Thanks for your note. What's in it for them? How does the media benefit from promoting values that differ greatly from those of the country in general. Aren't they neglecting a huge chunk of the market?

Fox News has already demonstrated that conservative-themed programming can consistently draw big ratings--but no one seems eager to launch some sort of Fox News competitor.

Don't these companies have some sort of financial motive to be more like Fox News?

How come there's only one Fox News channel? There should be at least a hundred. A hundred? Make that a thousand.

Whoops. I got a little carried away there. But you get my point.

I don't really understand why so many media companies--companies that are out to make money--don't come close to representing the people.
