Their Aspirations Must Be Met!

As I listened to the news Thursday Feb 10th  and heard President Obama’s remarks regarding President Mubarak’s decision to not leave office. I was struck by his words. To better illustrate my thoughts I’ve made three substitutions to the text of his remarks shown below; Egypt to America, Egyptian to American, and United States to the administration.

image“As we have said from the beginning of this unrest, the future of America will be determined by the American people. But this administration has also been clear that we stand for a set of core principles. We believe that the universal rights of the American people must be respected, and their aspirations must be met.  …

“The American people have made it clear that there is no going back to the way things were: America has changed, and its future is in the hands of the people. Those who have exercised their right to peaceful assembly represent the greatness of the American people, and are broadly representative of American society. We have seen young and old, rich and poor, Muslim and Christian join together, and earn the respect of the world through their non-violent calls for change. …  They have made it clear that America must reflect their hopes, fulfill their highest aspirations, and tap their boundless potential. In these difficult times, I know that the American people will persevere, and they must know that they will continue to have a friend in this administration.”

imageI heard him speak and thought Obamacare. I considered the numerous peaceful Tea Party and 9/12 rallies. I envisioned +300,000 people on the mall listening to how they must change and be better. Then I thought about the administration’s and its allies’  reaction: AstroTurf, bigots, racists, extremists, uninformed … .

So let me understand, when citizens of another country peaceably protest they are applauded and their government is chastised if it doesn’t respond but when Americans, in significantly larger numbers, protest they are demeaned, vilified and marginalized by the administration and mainstream media. Should not our aspirations for a smaller federal government constrained by Constitutional limits also be met? After all according to polls (and the results of the last election) we represent a majority of the citizens.

  1. Well said, Rod; I had the same thoughts regarding substituting Egypt with America and also Iran. The hypocrisy and dishonesty of this administration and the Left (but then I repeat myself) is breathtaking. I hear Obama and I think of John 8:44.

  3. Apparently you are not watching FOX "News" much. In the past month they have criticized, belittled, called ignorant, called aggressive, called uninformed and called other things about the folks peacefully assembling across the country to fight the Republicans trying to destroy unions in an attempt to defund democratic political campaigns in future elections and pretending it is a budgetary issue. FOX has been cheer leading this effort and belittling the protesters en masse and with unabashed vitriol and venom. Has this been lost on you or do you only see what you want to see? If you want proof of this just let me know. I am happy to oblige.

If you recall, about two years ago another election took place where the results decidedly favored what the Dems wanted for America. But something tells me you were not on board with that majority.

Not sure what your first comment has to do with the post. The demonization of the Tea Party and conservatives by the administration and mainstream media is undeniable. As is their hypocracy in their coverage on Wisconsin.

With respect to the 2008 election. Yes, people voted for change, and it was needed, but I doubt seriously that the kind of change which was implemented in the first 2 years of President Obama's term was the kind of change most people wanted. The 2010 election results were unequivocal in that regard.

The polls also confirm that most Americans are conservative (42%) or moderate (35%) and liberals (20) are the clear minority. See the following poll from Gallup: http://www.gallup.com/poll/141032/2010-conservatives-outnumber-moderates-liberals.aspx which shows that since 1992 this has always been then case. The liberal % has ranged from 17% to 22% in that time frame while the conservative % has ranged from 37% to 43%.

I'm not sure what vitriol you are talking about on Fox News. If it really was that bad I don't think they would be crushing the other cable news networks in the ratings.

I watch O'Reilly on a regular basis,Glenn Beck less frequently, and I just don't see it. Glenn is not mean spirited but he is passionate and his team does a lot of work to bring information out that is generally not presented in the media. However, he always asks people to do their own research and see if the come up the same conclusions he does. Bill always presents both sides of the issues and challenges both sides. I rarely watch Sean Hannity because I feel he is often too combative. In contrast I must say that CNN and MSNBC have many more combative and one sided hosts than Fox's opinion show hosts (in my view only Hannity fits the combative one-sided - Republican v. Democrat category - and even Sean takes Republicans to task with they are on what he perceives to be the wrong side of an issue).
